CUSTOM & STOCK — While our standard floorplan is a 24 x 40 portable classroom, Fort Modular can provide custom built school portables, classroom complexes, residential schools, and full school campuses for both temporary and permanent needs. Serving mostly BC and Alberta, Fort Modular can provide an inventory of used portable buildings as well as new construction. One of our specialties is renovating pre-owned buildings so that you get the look and feel of a new building — but at a fraction of the cost.
“Portable classrooms” have gained a poor reputation over the years, but that negative perception is not necessarily true.
Today’s portable or modular buildings are often built to much higher design and construction standards than site-built structures. They have to undergo the rigors of transportation and must be built tough enough to withstand an earthquake. Plus they are built indoors and away from the ravages of weather and pests. So in many ways, they are better quality than stick-built construction.
So “portables” can be as durable and long-lasting as any site-built structure. The only difference you might notice would be in the foundations. Many portable or modular buildings are installed on permanent concrete foundations and give the complete look and feel of site built. Yet, even when installed on permanent foundations, the buildings can still be transported if needs change in future.
Temporary foundations can be on a skid or blocks, and surrounded with building skirting. Wooden decks, stairs, ramps, and other features are often added after the installation.
And if you want better curb appeal, modular buildings can serve as the basic, pre-fabricated building blocks in the architectural design of a much larger complex — even 2 or 3 storey buildings. Different siding options, plus the option for peaked roofs and vaulted ceilings, can make portable buildings as attractive as any stick-built structure. It’s just all a matter of imagination and design.
So don’t let any preconceived notions of an old school portable taint your perception of what a modular classroom could be. Great design combined with top notch construction can give you a beautiful portable building that is as comfortable as any site-built classroom.
